Artwork safe as Somerset House fire contained

A significant fire at Somerset House in central London has been contained after around 125 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze. The fire broke out in the west wing of the historic landmark just before midday on Saturday. Although the fire is now under control, firefighters are still working to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire in the roof space.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported no injuries, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Fortunately, no artworks were housed in the affected part of the building, and all visitors and staff were safely evacuated.

Thick grey smoke was seen rising from the building, visible across the London skyline, and the area surrounding Somerset House has been cordoned off. Due to the smoke, the London Ambulance Service advised people to avoid the area and urged local businesses to keep windows and doors closed.

Somerset House, known for its Georgian-era architecture and as a prominent arts venue, will remain closed until further notice. The Courtauld Gallery, located within Somerset House and home to significant artworks including Van Gogh's *Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear*, is set to reopen tomorrow. However, all events scheduled for Saturday at Somerset House were canceled.

Firefighters will remain at the scene into Sunday to ensure the fire is fully extinguished. The LFB's response to the incident has been described as complex and technical, involving 20 fire engines and four aerial ladders, including a 64-meter-long ladder. Road closures remain in place as the investigation into the fire's cause continues.
