Refugee charities close for safety following riots

Refugee charities in the UK are navigating the challenges of ongoing unrest while continuing to provide support to migrants. Amid rising tensions, some organizations have taken steps to protect themselves and those they serve, including temporarily closing offices and canceling events for asylum seekers.

In Newcastle, a lawyer with an immigration practice has shut down his office due to concerns over potential targeting. Similarly, a charity in north-east England has closed its doors and canceled planned events, citing fears for the safety of both volunteers and asylum seekers. Volunteers from this charity have reported experiencing racial abuse while traveling to distribute safety advice to asylum seekers housed in a Newcastle hotel.

In Sunderland, where riots occurred recently, another refugee charity has noted that many migrants are "terrified" following the unrest. An event planned for children saw low attendance, with only one child out of 20 registered participants showing up, reflecting the fear within the community.

Despite the challenges, some charities have highlighted the positive role of the police. A Northumberland-based refugee charity noted that the supportive actions of local police, who returned to speak with the community after the riots, have been reassuring for many migrants. For some asylum seekers, who come from countries where police are not seen as protectors, this support has been a welcome change.

Residents of Sunderland have also shown solidarity by taking to the streets to clean up after the riots, demonstrating that the violent actions were carried out by a small minority, and that most people in the community are supportive.

Northumbria Police have reassured the community that they are committed to maintaining safety, with Assistant Chief Constable Andrew Hill stating that those involved in the unrest will face severe legal consequences. The Home Office has also emphasized that all asylum seeker accommodation sites have security measures in place, which are being continually reviewed.
